The internet as an ethical space. What that means to me

By Dumziii Mofolo on

This blog post is reflection writing based on my understanding of the internet as an ethical space, what it means to me and how I frame it as an ethical space.

To me, the concept of the internet as an ethical space means that everyone who uses and has access to the internet ought to behave in a specific way that reflects their understanding of morality and the principle of understanding what is right and wrong. It also means that for as long as someone has access to the internet and participates in the activities that the internet has to offer , together with others, they need to ensure that they treat everyone else with the level of respect that they would like to receive tenfold. The internet as an ethical space to me also means that users recognize the importance of responsible behavior online, just as they would in physical spaces. It requires a commitment to respecting others' privacy, security, and dignity. This includes being mindful of the content we create and share, avoiding harmful or offensive material, and engaging in constructive dialogue. It also involves recognizing the digital divide and working to ensure equal access to information and opportunities for all.

What would this look like ?

Understanding that the internet is an ethical space means recognizing the impact of our online actions on real people and communities.Acknowleding that the person behind the screen is a real human being just like I am and also has feelings I need to be aware of is also part of what i understand as the internet being an ethical space. As such , the embodying of the concept of the internet as an ethical space would look like the following way(atleast according to the way i would imagine it to:)
It requires us to be accountable for our words and actions, apologize when we harm others, and make amends when possible.
It also involves advocating for policies and regulations that promote a free, open, and secure internet, accessible to all.
Respectful online interactions, free from cyberbullying and hate speech.
Inclusive and diverse online communities, where everyone feels welcome and valued and is allowed to express whatever as long as they respsct those around them.
Responsible social media platforms, prioritizing user well-being and data privacy.
By fostering a culture of empathy, inclusivity, and responsibility, we can create a safer and more positive online environment for everyone.

The challenges of the internet being an ethical space
From the top of my head, One of the challenges we face with the internet being an ethical space is how unethical behavior has been normalized. Respect is not as universal as it should be in all parts of the world and people behave in different ways on the internet. This anonymity can lead to a lack of accountability and a culture of toxicity because people have the mindset that they can get away with certain behaviors because they are over the internet and not in person. Additionally, the internet's global nature makes it difficult to establish a unified set of ethical standards and laws. Different countries have varying laws and regulations regarding online behavior, making it challenging to ensure consistency and enforcement because what may work in South Africa is totally against the law in Australia. The internet's rapid evolution and technological advancements also outpace ethical considerations, creating a constant need for catch-up. New platforms and services emerge before ethical guidelines can be established, leading to unintended consequences.
Moreover, the internet's openness and anonymity make it vulnerable to manipulation and disinformation. Fake news, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns can spread quickly, making it difficult to distinguish fact from fiction especially on social media. The internet's business model, which often prioritizes engagement and profit over user well-being, also perpetuates unethical behavior. Algorithms that promote sensational content and encourage addiction can contribute to a toxic online environment. This is the part where the internet unfortunately becomes a scary place for some people.
